LIMA, PERU

On the first day of an eight-day trip to South America, Sister Sharon Eubank and Sister Carol F. McConkie, First Counselors in the Relief Society General Presidency and Young Women General Presidency, met with Peru’s first lady, Nancy Lange Kuczynski, wife of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

“She was very candid and shared her challenges, her hopes, and her efforts on behalf of her family and her country,” said Sister McConkie, according to a Mormon Newsroom press release.

Sister McConkie, who serves as First Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, called the meeting “delightful” and said the first lady was “very interested in the welfare of women and children,” according to the release.

The women talked with the first lady about the youth in the area, specifically those who recently volunteered as Mormon Helping Hands. The Church auxiliary leaders also provided the first lady—who is a mother to a teenage daughter—some Church booklets for youth today.

“She is so grateful for [the youth of the Church’s] service,” Sister McConkie said in the release. “Most remarkable for her was to see their enthusiasm and unity in their work. She hopes that all of the youth of Peru can feel that kind of joy and satisfaction in their work and in service for others.”

The auxiliary leaders—whose assignment included visits to Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador October 14–22—also met with local Church members and leaders and participated in training meetings and Sunday worship.

Sister Eubank, who in addition to serving as the First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency also works as the director of LDS Charities—the humanitarian arm of the Church—continued to travel in South America to visit some of the welfare projects of the Church in Bolivia.
