President Russell M. Nelson reemphasizes the “course correction” of referring to the Church by its divinely given name during the Sunday morning session of October 2018 general conference.

Talk Summaries

Highlighting the half-dozen addresses of the Sunday morning session of October 2018 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson reemphasized the “course correction” of referring to the Church by its divinely given name: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Thus, the name of the Church is not negotiable. When the Savior clearly states what the name of His Church should be, and even precedes His declaration with, ‘Thus shall my church be called,’ He is serious. And if we allow nicknames to be used and adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, He is offended.” (See related story.)

President M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, spoke of the “glorious vision” of the afterlife eventually recorded as Doctrine and Covenants section 138. The vision was received a century ago by President Joseph F. Smith, President Ballard’s great-grandfather.

President Ballard invited all to again read the recorded vision. “As you do so, may the Lord bless you to more fully understand and appreciate God’s love and His plan of salvation and happiness for His children.”

Also speaking in the Sunday morning session were Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on the ministry of reconciliation; Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on dealing with life’s struggles and pains; Sister Bonnie H. Cordon, the Young Women General President, on becoming a shepherd through ministering; and Elder Shayne M. Bowen, a General Authority Seventy, on strengthening one’s testimony through the Book of Mormon.

President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, conducted the session.

The invocation was offered by Elder Allan F. Packer, a General Authority given emeritus status the day before; Elder Donald L. Hallstrom, a General Authority Seventy, gave the benediction.

Music was provided by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, with Mack Wilberg as director and Richard Elliott and Andrew Unsworth as organists.
