“Living and reading by the word of God will build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement.” —First Presidency letter

The First Presidency has announced a series of resources to help Church members and their families study the scriptures at home: Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families. The first of these resources will focus on the New Testament, which is the course of study for Sunday School and Primary classes in 2019.

“Living by and reading the word of God,” the First Presidency says, “will build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement” (First Presidency letter, June 29, 2018).

In addition, new teaching resources, Come, Follow Me—For Primary and Come, Follow Me—For Sunday School, will be provided for use beginning in January 2019. These new 2019 resources take a home-centered, Church-supported approach to gospel living, learning, and teaching (see Handbook 2: Administering the Church [2010], 1.4).

For years Church leaders have been emphasizing that home is the best place to live, learn, and teach the gospel, and gospel learning and teaching should be part of our daily lives, not confined to Sunday classes.

Using the new Come, Follow Me resources, Primary and youth and adult Sunday School classes support home-centered gospel learning as teachers inspire learners to experience the power of God’s word for themselves. They invite class members to discover gospel truths in the scriptures and share their discoveries with each other “that all may be edified of all” (D&C 88:122).

The resources for 2019are the first of what eventually will be a four-year rotation of study based on the four main books of scripture. Members will find digital versions of these resources on ChurchofJesusChrist.org and in theGospel Library app later this year.

In 2019, the focus of the new teaching resource Come, Follow Me—For Primary is on the New Testament.

Beginning January 1, 2019, both adult and youth Sunday School classes will learn from Come, Follow Me—For Sunday School.

Leaders hope members will use the new resources to strengthen faith, deepen conversion, and improve teaching in the home and at church.

Order soon

Because these changes affect manuals in 46 languages, clerks will need to place orders for the new Primary and Sunday School classroom manuals by August 31, 2018, to ensure manuals are delivered by January 1, 2019. The cost of these manuals will come from the local unit’s budget.

Because local units will automatically receive one printed copy of Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families for each household at no charge, clerks do not need to order this particular manual.

Instructions for Curriculum 2019 has a list of materials to be used in classes (available online at ChurchofJesusChrist.org/2019curriculum and in the Gospel Library app under “Lessons”).

A list of materials to be discarded after December 31, 2018, has been sent to each unit.
