Minister to Others

Lesson 1: Watch Over Each Class Member

Introduce the Principle

Just hours before the Savior’s atoning sacrifice, He commanded His Apostles to “love one another” as He had loved them. When you sincerely love and care about each class member, you show you are striving to be a disciple of Jesus Christ (see John 13:34–35).

Learn Together

The Prophet Joseph Smith repeatedly taught the critical importance of leading others with genuine love and kindness. He said: “Nothing is so much calculated to lead people to forsake sin as to take them by the hand, and watch over them with tenderness. When persons manifest the least kindness and love to me, O what power it has over my mind, while the opposite course has a tendency to harrow up all the harsh feelings and depress the human mind” (History of the Church,5:23–24).

  • Think of a time when someone showed genuine love and care for you. What did that person do? How did it affect you? How did it help you change for the better?
  • Why do you think love has such a powerful influence for good on others?

Live What We Are Learning

  • Brainstorm and/or role-play a variety of ways you can reach out to individual young women.
  • Prayerfully discuss the best ways you can help specific class members feel needed and loved.
  • Identify one thing each presidency member will do this week to extend sincere love and friendship to an individual class member. Share your experiences at the next class presidency meeting.
