Use Approved Lesson Materials

(5.5.4, Teach the Doctrine)

gospel principles manual

“Use the scriptures and the approved curriculum materials, teaching with the objective to bless and inspire the lives of those assigned to you” (M. Russell Ballard, “Teaching—No Greater Call,” Ensign, May 1983, 70).
In Sunday Relief Society meetings, women learn doctrines and principles of the gospel that will help them increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need.  The teacher uses the scriptures, the teachings of latter-day prophets and approved Church materials including the current Relief Society manual. (5.5.4, 9.4.1)

WeekWho TeachesWhat Is Taught

1st Sunday

Relief Society president or counselor

Members of the Relief Society presidency seek the guidance of the Spirit as they determine subjects to teach.  The Relief Society president may also counsel with the bishop about subjects he would like the sisters to discuss.  These could include women’s roles and responsibilities in the gospel, strengthening marriages and families, visiting teaching, service, missionary work, convert retention, activation, spiritual and temporal welfare, and temple and family history work and the history and purposes of Relief Society. Time may be given for sisters to share their testimonies.  See resources listed below.

2nd and 3rd Sundays

A Relief Society teacher or a member of the Relief Society presidency

The lesson comes from the current Relief Society manual and the scriptures. Lessons are generally taught in the order they are presented in the manual and on the same Sunday they are taught in elders quorum and high priests group meetings.

4th Sunday

A Relief Society teacher or a member of the Relief Society presidency

The lesson comes from the most recent General Conference.  The stake president or the bishop selects the messages.

5th Sunday

The bishop or branch president determines the subject, the instructor, and whether the Relief Society and Melchizedek Priesthood meet separately or together. See resources listed below.
