Teaching and Ministering in the Savior’s Way

“All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children” (3 Nephi 22:13)

Dear Primary Leaders:

What a sacred privilege it is to teach children!  When we remember Jesus Christ’s instructions to “behold your little ones” and “feed my lambs,” we desire to teach in the Savior’s way (3 Nephi 17:23; John 21:15). As Primary leaders, we should seek to strengthen the shepherds so that they will be better prepared to feed His lambs.

The following suggestions will help you plan training for Primary teachers, including the annual stake auxiliary leadership meeting. (See Handbook 2: Administering the Church [2010], 18.3.11.)

Prepare Spiritually

The first priority for teachers is to prepare spiritually. As we study the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day prophets, pray, fast, and humble ourselves before the Lord, we are able to receive inspiration to guide us in our personal lives, our family responsibilities, and our callings.

Counsel Together

We encourage Primary teachers to attend teacher council meetings whenever possible. These meetings provide opportunities to receive personal revelation, share experiences, learn from others, foster unity, and improve teaching skills. As you prayerfully consider your Primary organization, you will be led by the Spirit to know how to help each teacher effectively participate in teacher councils.

Minister to Others

Orient new teachers as soon as they are called, as well as those teachers who were never oriented. This orientation is an opportunity to inspire teachers with what it means to teach in the Savior’s way. As you build relationships with Primary teachers and give them ongoing support, your ministering provides personal spiritual uplift that will encourage and strengthen them.

Teach the Gospel

Help Primary teachers teach the gospel effectively. Emphasize that young children can understand the gospel when they are taught doctrine simply and in sequence. Primary songs are a powerful way to help children learn and remember gospel truths.
