Frequently Asked Questions for U.S. and Canadian Residents

Do missionaries need to send their actual passport?

My signature does not match the name printed on my passport. Is that a problem?

It will not be a problem.

Should I wait until I have my FBI clearance before mailing in the rest of the visa requirements?

No, missionaries should send in the passport, 4 passport photos, and passport copy without their FBI clearance to Missionary Travel once the passport is in hand. The FBI clearance will be sent separately via email. Please follow the specific instructions in your visa packet on how to send the results to Missionary Travel.

Can missionaries take an international trip with their passport before they go on their mission?

If the trip is within a month of their missionary training center entry date, missionaries should not take an international trip. All documents must be turned in at least a month before missionaries enter.

Do I need to submit a birth certificate with apostille?

If you are serving in the Argentina Posadas mission you will need to send in a certified birth certificate with apostille because you will also be obtaining a visa for Paraguay. The other Argentina missions no longer require a birth certificate to be submitted to obtain a visa.

If missionaries have lost their visa packet, can they get a new one emailed to them?

Yes. Missionaries should call 1-800-537-3537 and ask for the visa packet to be emailed to them.

Do passport photos need to match?

Yes, the 4 passport photos do need to match and missionaries need to be in missionary attire. No scanned copies or photocopies (homemade copies) will be accepted.

How do I apply for my FBI clearance?

You will obtain your FBI clearance through an expedited service called National Background Check. On the application make sure to mark the box next to Foreign Residency/Travel in section 2 and mark option 1 in section 4. Please be sure to put in a cell phone number in section 6 (do not put a landline number) as well as an email address of a family member (such as a parent) in case the results come after you enter the MTC. The cost will be $50. Make sure everything is filled out on the application before sending it in. You must send 2 sets of fingerprints done on the FD-258 form along with the application and payment.

When should I apply for my FBI clearance?

Please apply no earlier than 4 weeks prior to your Provo MTC date. If you are going to the Argentina MTC, apply 8 weeks before. FBI clearances are only valid 90 days, and if you apply earlier than 4 weeks before your MTC arrival date, you will have to apply again. Senior couples only: Please apply no earlier than 8 weeks prior to your MTC date.

How do I send the FBI clearance to missionary travel?

The FBI results will come via email to the address written in section 6 of the application. Please keep track of the email address and cell number you put on the application.
