Frequently Asked Questions for U.S. and Canadian Residents

If missionaries cannot pay for the visa, does this matter?

Yes, it does. Missionaries must pay for the visa at the conclusion of the online visa process. The cost is between $400 to $500 USD depending on the current exchange rate. After your visa documents have been received, a reimbursement check will be sent to you to cover the cost of the visa.

Note: Missionaries cannot apply for the online visa until they are 18 years old or older.

If missionaries have some of their visa documents but not everything, can they mail some now and mail the rest later?

No. Missionaries should send everything together.

When will missionaries get their visa?

Missionaries will receive their visa at the MTC approximately 1 week before they are scheduled to travel to the mission.

If a missionary didn’t sign their middle name on the passport, is that okay?

Yes. Missionaries should not alter the signature on their passport. The signature on a missionary’s visa paperwork needs to match the missionary’s passport signature.

Do I need to send in my actual passport?

No. However, please send in a clear copy of your passport ID page with your visa documents.

Are personal appearances required? When and where will I appear?

Yes personal appearances are required. You will appear at an approved consulate location closest to your home. The consulate appointment will be arranged by the Missionary Travel Office a few weeks after you have submitted your visa paperwork.

Can I take an international trip before I enter the MTC?

Yes. But please keep in mind that when you make your personal appearance, you will be required to surrender your passport to the consulate for approximately 4-6 weeks. Please discuss any planned international trips with your visa agent when scheduling your consulate appearance.

If missionaries make a mistake or there is incorrect information on their visa application, what should they do?

Missionaries should enter all information carefully into the online visa form to avoid making any mistakes. They should also carefully review the information prior to submitting and printing the application. If mistakes are made, the missionary will need to start the process over again.

How do I attach my photos to the application?

Please do not attach the photos to the application.
