Members of the military who are also faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may receive the temple endowment and be authorized to wear the temple garment. Military members, due to their uniform requirements, are authorized to wear a uniform temple garment specifically for when they are in uniform.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worship in the holy temples. Adult members of the Church who have received the temple endowment are authorized to wear the temple garment. Members are instructed to wear the temple garment day and night throughout their life. The garment is a sacred symbol of Jesus Christ. Wearing it is an outward expression of an inner commitment to follow Him and a reminder of temple covenants. When members keep their covenants, including the sacred privilege to wear the garment as instructed, they will have greater access to the Savior’s mercy, protection, strength, and power.
Members and priesthood leaders with questions about uniform temple garments should consult General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 38.5.7, Gospel Library and the Garment Guidelines for Military, Law Enforcement, and Firefighters (available in English and Spanish).
Beehive Clothing no longer manufactures military temple garments for Church distribution centers or the Online Store for members. The colors and fabrics of clothing worn by the different militaries and their services are so diverse that production of these items is not feasible. Beehive Clothing can place temple markings in the tops and bottoms of uniform-specified undergarments. The process to request this service is explained below.
If you have received the temple endowment, you should strive to wear the temple garment as instructed. Avoid any inappropriate display of the garment to those who do not understand its significance. If you cannot wear the garment because of military regulations or other circumstances beyond your control, your status in the Church is not affected as you maintain your temple covenants. As soon as circumstances permit, it is your privilege, right, and duty to wear the garment again.
Most militaries allow members to wear their white temple garment bottoms while in uniform, so you may need to send only uniform tops to Beehive Clothing. This may be different during initial training phases. Please consider the type of fabric required for your military occupation and wear only fabrics that are suitable to protect you in the environment you work in, such as vehicles, aircraft, ships, and exposure to hazardous materials like chemicals, heat, and flames. Synthetic fabrics will melt in these circumstances, and natural materials like cotton are more protective. Fire-resistant uniform undergarments are authorized for temple markings.
Marked uniform undergarments can be worn in most situations in the military, including physical training. Physical training shorts or approved uniform compression shorts can be marked as garment bottoms. Colored undershorts may be marked, provided they are modest and have an inseam that extends down the leg. A sleeveless undershirt that comes to the edge of the shoulder and is in line with the newly approved garment style can now be marked as a garment. Industry-standard tank tops do not meet garment specifications and will not be marked. Please consult with Beehive Clothing before sending clothing items to ensure that they are authorized for temple markings.
Military uniform undergarments desired for marking can have official government markings on them, such as an organization’s name or insignia, or individual identification on them, such as name, rank, and branch of service. Clothing manufacturer names and logos are allowed as well if they are small in size, but no other logos or insignia are permitted. Printed words or images not in harmony with the sacred nature of the garment are not permitted, such as weapons, skulls, or crossbones. Many military units will design a unit shirt for physical training with images and slogans on them particular to that unit’s history. Some of these shirts are not appropriate for temple markings.
All military uniform undergarment bottoms submitted for marking must be new and never worn. All military uniform undergarment tops must be clean, free from stains, and in good condition.
If you have additional questions about wearing the garment or if priesthood leaders need further information or additional resources, please contact the Military Relations Office at 1-801-240-2286 or MilitaryRelations@ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
