Teaching the doctrines and principles of the gospel is a significant responsibility of Melchizedek Priesthood leaders. Quorum leaders should ensure that lessons and discussions are useful and doctrinally correct and that they are uplifting and build faith.
The Melchizedek Priesthood and the Relief Society study the same lessons, second and fourth Sunday of each month. This parallel schedule facilitates gospel study and discussion in the home. However, Melchizedek Priesthood brethren and Relief Society sisters meet separately, even on weeks when the same lesson is being studied. An exception may be made for fifth-Sunday discussions, which may be conducted under the direction of the bishopric in a meeting that combines the brethren and sisters. (See "Sunday Priesthood Meetings" in Handbook 2: 7.8.1.)
Elders quorum presidents teach the quorum the purposes of ministering and inspire them to fulfill their duties well. See Handbook 2: 7.4 to learn how to fulfill these responsibilities. For help with adapting ministering to local needs, see sections 7.4.3 and 17.2 in the handbook.
Welfare is central to the work of the bishop, the elders quorum, and the Relief Society. Learn how to get started in your welfare responsibilities, read welfare messages from leaders, and access additional leader resources.
Priesthood leaders should be aware of the needs of members who are single and provide them with opportunities for growth and service.
A planning form titled New and Returning Member Progress (08616) has been developed to help ward councils plan specific ways to strengthen new members and those returning to activity in the Church.
