Swimming is fun activity for most people, but it can be dangerous. According to national statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about ten unintentional drownings occur per day, and one in five of those will be children 14 and younger. And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care.


Remember these safe swimming tips:

  1. Use the “buddy system”
  2. Know the skill level of participants
  3. Careful and qualified supervision
  4. Lifeguards
  5. Risks of elevated entry
  6. PFD (life jackets)
  7. Learn to swim
  8. Risks of open water (cold and hypothermia and cramps)
  9. Be in shape
  10. Throw a lifeline; don’t go
