Establishing Standards as a Family
As we seek to establish standards around technology use in our home, we should involve our children. Including our children in establishing standards helps them understand why we need standards. Once standards are agreed upon, each family member can judge his or her behavior by whether or not it aligns with the family standards. In addition to establishing standards around technology, we should help children understand how to manage their emotions and feelings. This protects them as they learn why making decisions that align with God’s plan will lead them to happiness.
We can’t be with our children all the time, but we can teach them to seek the companionship of the Holy Ghost. As they remember the teachings of loving parents, they will be more likely to make good choices. It’s important to have continual open conversations about healthy sexual development and the appropriate expression of those feelings.
Ideas for Taking Action
Here are some ideas that others have found helpful. Prayerfully consider what actions might be best for your family, taking into account that they may or may not be listed here.
- Consider counseling with your family to establish family standards around technology use. Regularly assess as a family council how each family member, including parents, is doing in maintaining the standards.
- Discuss with your children the negative things associated with pornography, including the messages it sends about fidelity, marriage, violence, and respect.
- Identify the types of media that help draw the Holy Ghost into the lives of each family member, and encourage them to seek out such media. Help family members understand why media that drives the Spirit away will not be allowed in your home.
- Strive to keep the Sabbath day holy. Discuss as a family how observing the Sabbath helps safeguard your home.
